for about 3 weeks and has been taking benadyl.vet thinks he is allergic to pollen
thank for the replies
My opinion is, don't guess - test. That is the only surefire way to know if your dealing with allergies and WHAT allergies you are dealing with.
You could try a grain free food first and see if it makes a difference before doing the testing.

Are you giving any supplements - fish body oil.
Pollen will often effect the eyes as well. Do you see gewy runny eyes?
Hmm - does he have any build-up/irritation in his ears/on his rump? Our vet said that food allergies often (though not always) express themselves in those two places. That may help you determine if its the food or an environmental issue (pollen, etc).
What about fleas? is he on flea prevention?
My guy was recently diagnosed with demodex. He was very itchy, had a balding spot around his eye, and scratched the heck out of his sides. With the use of antibacterial ointment, an external eye cream, and weekly injections, he's doing much better. Demodex are little mites that live near the hair follicles. Once he was diagnosed and started treatments there was a dramatic improvement. We bathe him every few weeks with a medicated shampoo and conditioner which also helps. Perhaps it's demodex?
