My chocolate's face is breaking out. He is almost 11 months. Do labs get acne?
Yes, young dogs can get acne, but will eventually grow out of it. Also, helps not to feed your dog out of a plastic bowl as plastic harbors bacteria. About 2 years of age they start to outgrow it, but some will have occasional breakouts even past this. Google/Yahoo canine acne for more info.
It is on the side of his face, under his ears. There is a small bump between his eyes as well. You can feel them with your hand, they sometimes are crusty and fall off in your hand. I have noticed his underside coat, pits threw his belly, are really thin, I thought this might be from the summer heat. Our other 11 month old (black) has no skin problems, and a full coat. They are the same age, but different litters, and they eat the same food.
Neiko has gotten that in the past, on the outside of his lower lips. I always take him in to get it looked at though. Since he's had melanoma removed from his ear, I try not to let lumps go unchecked. If it is acne, there's a cream you can put on it which cleared it right up for us.
we had a black lab years ago who had canine acne he was about the same age as yours but completely out grew it by 2 1/2.
Because he was such a "ganet" with his food, he would eat really quickly, pushing his face into the bowl. Back then (15-20) yrs ago we used to feed them a canned meat with a mixer biscuit- the vet thought that his pores were getting blocked up with food causing the spots- they were all on his chin.
I remember we had to rub a cream into them and they cleared up a lot.
sorry i can't remember what the cream was i was quite young and have forgotten.
