    DefaultSwollen, painful tail bump

    Hello new friends,
We are NEW members to Just Labradors forum. Will be introducing Zoe Bear, 5 year old 1/2 lab, 1/2 newfie to the forum. At this time, however, we are having a tough time with a swollen, painful tail, about 1-2 inches from base. Several vet visits (3 different vets), all immediately check for impacted anal glands, never a problem. Unsure what else it could be. I give her Benadryl and 1/2 a Rimadyl which seems to relieve pain and swelling temporarily. 4 -5 hours later swelling returns. Any thoughts or suggestions would be most appreciated. She seems to be suffering.

    Where are you located?

I'm wondering if you're within realistic range of a School/College of VetMed wheere you could get the highest diagnostic & treatment services.

Has she been swimming lately? If so, it could be cold tail...

Thanks for the suggestion, We are approximately 1 hr. east of Gainesville, Fl in rural north central Florida area along the St. Johns River. No cold water here, unfortunately, close to 100 degrees today! Lots of fire ants and biting creatures in the sandy soil, but Zoe has experienced these same symptoms to varying degrees since puppyhood. U of Fl Vet school / clinic definitely close by, but how to get an appointment? Is a referral required? Your input is MOST appreciated!

You don't have to swim in cold water in order to get cold tail...it's just what they call it. It's an over use of the tail in some cases.

A referral is not usually required for a vet school. Just call them up.

Thank you soo much for the U. of Fl. appt. link. I have appt. with local vet early Wed a.m., then, if no diagnosis or plan, I will contact U. of Fl. for follow up. Zoe seems more agitated and restless. Even the Benadryl is not helping calm her like it was. She is pretty pitiful, so all your suggestions and support are most appreciated! I will update tomorrow evening.
