    DefaultWhat's with green beans..??

Okay, I've seen people mention feeding their dogs green beans on this forum a few times now, and I'm wondering...

    Why? ???

Do they do something for them nutritionally... or are they just popular snacks? When do you feed them and how much?

And if anyone has a URL for any sort of study, article outlining the "why" and the "how" of feeding beans that'd be great! ;D ;D

    Thanks folks!!

i fed jazz green beans when she had to lose weight. It is a good filler you can add to kibble or give as snacks that is very low in calories.

I agree with the above. People use them as fillers. They make the dog feel full so they are especially good for weight loss when the dog is "suffering" with cut rations. Of course, 'fillers' are not limited to just green beans. Most types of veggies can be used. My dogs frequently share our organic veggies...we get a large box of organic veggies delivered to our door every week.

Carrots are ok but they may cause some orange stool. I've been told to limit them some. Mocha loves them and gets them occasionally but I normally only give her a few baby carrots at a time.

Our vet told us that green beans are not low in calories and that cooking vegetables reduces their nutritional value. This sounded wrong to me, but I confess that I didn't question it.

green beans are virtually no calories (even in human standards). And yes, it's typically used as a filler when a dog needs to lose weight.

Regarding the carrots...can be a good filler, HOWEVER, unlike beans, are higher in sugar...so you need to be careful with how many you feed.

This is very helpful. What do you do--just put them right from the can onto the food? Do you heat them up or something first?

depends on you. I usually get the canned with no salt added. drain it and throw it in the bowl with the kibble.
