To aid with Rowan's diarrhea ~ how much white rice should I be adding at each meal. I have been doing about 3 tbsp but that isn't seeming to do the trick.
I must have missed your post about her having diarrhea...
How long has she had it for? are you feeding just rice or chicken and rice?
I would feed her the same amount of food you normally feed but only with the chicken/rice.
She has had diarrhea for over a week ~ since bringing her home. We are in the midst of doing a switch over in food. We are doing a 50-50 mix of old/new food. The breeder told us to add rice to her regular food but didn't say how much. I added 1/2 c this morning. :-\
May I ask why you are switching her food so soon?
Not that I want to discredit your breeder, but I can't imagine mixing the rice with something that is causing her problems (the dog food) will solve her diarrhea. You will need to feed the rice on its own (adding chicken will make it more appealing to the pup) for a day or two for the diarrhea to clear up. If it continues even after feeding the bland diet, you need to get the pup to the vet.
I have to switch her food as I can't buy the stuff the breeder had her on without making a 4 hour trip (one way to get it).
Forget the food, have you taken the pup to the vet? When you get a new pup, you need to take them within the first few days for a wellness check...most breeders require this. I would have the pup checked for ghiardia or coccidia. Grace came home with coccidia. Plus puppies can get dehydrated very quick, so diarrhea, while it can be treated in an adult lab with boiled chicken/lean burger and rice (not mixed with the kibble), with a pup, you need to have them checked right away.
Yes, we took the puppy for a wellness visit last week and the vet wasn't worried ~ put it down to stress. :-[
Did your vet run a fecal to look for coccidia, giardia or other parasites? The first two can be problems after the stress of moving to a new home and changing foods. A week of diarhhea for a young puppy doesn't sound good.
Too bad you couldn't have picked up a bag of her food to at least get her through the housetraining period. Ah well.
No, the vet didn't run these tests. :-[
Rowan has two bowel movements since breakfast at 6 am ~ looks like things are firming up for us a little! ;D
