There are lots of posts here about different items used to supplement a dog's diet... fish oil, salmon, cranberry caplets, vitamins, green beans, etc... For healthy coats, UTI's, and digestive ailments... It has me wondering if there is something we should be doing, but are not?
What do you supplement your dog's diet with, how often do you give it, and what benefit does it give?

No need to supplement if a dog is doing good on a complete food IMO. I would only add things like fish oil if the dog was having skin issues, glucosamine for joint issues, etc. Complete food is just that...complete. Adding unnecessary supplements to a dogs diet can upset the balance. That said, I feed a lot of raw, but I don't really consider that supplementing. Just my opinion.
I give my dogs fish oil and glucosamine supplements with their food. As long as you feed them good dog food, you really shouldn't have to supplement too much. Mine get fish oil for their coat....my chocolate lab has allergies and I heard that fish oil helps allergies. And Glucosamine for the joints just for preventative measures.
Thanks - I currently only supplement with "treats" in CoCo's Kong, such as green beans, peanut butter and/or yogurt mixed with her kibble, and a few biscuits (although we've recently cut these back).
Tangelo - At what age did you start giving them glucosamine?

We started Ender about a month ago on Glucosamine... more as a preventative "just in case" kind of thing.Originally Posted by CoCosMom

Puff eats Kirkland C&R (sold only at COSTCOs) -- very similar to Diamond C&R Natural.
I supplement that with one G&C (Costco brand) as a preventative, plus one Costco Fish Oil cap -- both are given with her evening meal.* Also with that evening meal, I mince up a small slice of salmon (about the size of one-half a typical slice of raw bacon) in some hot water, let it cool until it's tepid, and then add her 1¼ c. of kibble.
Why?* As a preventative against joint problems and for a shine in her coat.
