Has anyone had any problems with feeding raw food (i.e raw chicken and vegetables) to pregnant bitches? I am specifically talking about harm to puppies or lack of nutrition issues. I have had two vets tell me two different things, so I'm curious what any others have found?? Thanks
There aren't a whole lot of RAW feeders on this forum. If you go to this board http://www.lab-retriever.net/board/forumdisplay.php?f=34 you will find quite a few, and at least one person over there had 2-3 generations of RAW dogs.
lablvr, many vets are anti-raw. Mine is. : If you are lucky enough to find a vet that supports raw feeding they can be a good source of information. I still wouldn't rely on them 100% for nutritional advice though. The best thing to do is talk to other raw feeders (in person ideally).
One of my breeders (Murph's) feeds complete raw to all her dogs/pups including pregnant bitches. Murph was a raw feed pup.
what RAW meat are you having success with mixing in with kibble? We aren't currently doing any RAW feeding, but are interested in learning more. Advantages vs. disadvantages, etc.....It's always nice learning new things. We have a girl who will be having her first litter in November, so we're reading up on everything.
Feeding raw has many advantages, as you will see on those sites. Of course, that doesn't mean to say it will work for every dog, and it requires a lot of research to get it "right". I don't feed full raw, but I feed it as often as I can, and some of the benefits EVEN when fed in conjunction to kibble are smaller, firmer poops that don't smell much and turn white, brighter clean teeth, fresh breath, nice coat, increased energy levels, etc. My dogs look much healthier when fed the raw alongside the kibble.
