Actually I have two labs, a mom and her daughter. They are 13 and 14 and in very good health except for a gagging and hacking that results in coughing up water. My vet says its a tired epiglottis, and there's nothing I can do about it. But it's getting worse. Any suggestions?
I had an older foster dog that did that. All I did was limit him from drinking large amounts of water at one time. If he kept on gulping; I'd say "that's enough" and disrtract him and rub his throat.
Limit their intake of water if you can. Wet down their dry kibble when you feed them at night, that will make them less likely to gulp down water after they eat (Laura/Labby advice!).

Not much you can do. As the others said, try to slow down the gulping water. The gag reflex might be lacking in a 14 year old dog. One of the things that can happen as they age.
