I was curious as to what most of you feel is the best for heartworm preventive meds and how often you give them. I just got some interceptor from the vet here but I looked on some websites and noticed you can get a generic heartgard (ivermectin) a lot cheaper. ???
I use Heartguard plus - it's 1 a month for the months where your dog can be affected (and that varies depending on where you live). It as like 30$ for this year's supply so I never really looked to save money.

We use generic Ivermectin. Got the dogs tested for HW just to make sure it was working, and they all came back with a clean bill of health. The vet tried to tell me about the benefit of a dewormer in the other meds, but I am not really fearful of the dogs getting worms and it's easy enough to treat. Worth saving the money.
Just as Dani said -- Interceptor, every 45 days, year 'round.

I use Sentinel. He gets one every month all year around...
I have been buying one pill every month since he is still growing and his month to month weight change is significant.
