    DefaultEar discoloration

My 3 month old chocolate has a red sort of soft substance in his ear. My vet told me this was normal puppy gunk. It doesn't seem to bother him, but I clean his ears probably every other day, and it still build ups horribly. Is this normal from all of yours experience? I am just wondering if I should get second opinion.

I have never heard of "normal puppy gunk". Gunk in the ears is not normal at any age.

Could be a yeast infection caused by a food allergy.

If it looks like brown/red earwax, it is not normal. Change vets.

Regardless of age, a dogs ears should be clean. Some dirt is OK which you can wipe out, but if it's enough to warrant asking the vet, I think it's not OK.

It can be caused by a yeast infection or allergies.

    Do the ears smell too?

It is redish brown, but his ears don't smelll. I play with his ears and he doesn't seem to mind or act like he is in any pain. I cleaned his ears out really well the other night and laid the discharge out on a white piece of paper, and I didn't see any little things moving around, but I am thinking of getting a second opinion. The problem is that we live in a smaller town with only one BAD vet. It would require me instead of going 25 miles to a vet to going 45 miles, but it is worth it if something is wrong.

Thanks for ALL of your help
