I need an experienced ear sniffer
I have been reading the posts on ear cleaning and infections and now I have some questions. How do I know if they are problem stinky or just dog stinky? I think they usually are kind of stinky anyways. He never scratches at his ears but lately they have had more waxy buildup in them. I have cleaned them after he went swimming a few times, but have otherwise been hesitant to do anything since I have heard to leave them if they are okay.

Well in my experience, a yeast infection is a smell you'll never forget ;D

I do clean Sami's ears 1x - 2x a week, and always after swimming. My vet recommended it after she had yeasty ears at about 12 weeks of age. She hasn't had another episode since. I use Epi-Otic.

I was going to say something similar. You'll know the smell when you smell it.

Infected ears smell like yeast (have you ever used yeast for baking?) or dirty feet. Dogs ears should not smell bad so if they have any foul smell at all, I'd have a vet look at them. Yeast is just one type of ear infection (the most common) but there are others that look/smell differently.

If their ears are healthy, they won't smell, really, like anything. My brother's golden had yeasty ears and oh boy were they nasty smelling! You had to feel sorry for the dog - the smell had to drive him crazy!
