What causes lipomas? My old lab has lots of them. Just wondered if there is a way to prevent them. THanks

No way to prevent them, unfortunately they simply come with age but fortunately they don't usually cause any problems.

Labs seem to have a higher rate of these than a lot of other dogs. Mostly due to the layer of fat they have under their skin. Like Sharon said, there isn't much you can do to prevent them. Just do a complete body search on your dog monthly and make note of any new lumps and bumps. If you're not sure if something is a lipoma, have them checked by your vet.
