I have been feeding Zoey 1 cup in the mornign and one cup at night. I read on the web page today that it is a total of 800 cal. She also gets treats during the day. She ia chubbie labbie and we have been working on obedience thats why I cut her food back. Should I be concerned about the 800 cal? It does not seem to phase her.
How much does she weigh currently?*
How old is she? Puppies will need more calories.
It will be different for each dog (just as it is for each person based on activity, metabolism, age, etc) but I read somewhere (sorry...don't remember the source) that you give 17 kcals/lb to maintain weight.* If you want them to lose, you'll need to decrease it. This was for any breed, not just Labs. I know my Labs gain weight quickly so I don't follow that rule so take it for what its worth.*
Interesting--that's dead on for Theo. We feed him about 1200-1300 calories/day (3 cups/day, and a cup is about 400 calories), and he weights 74 lbs. 17*74 = 1248.It will be different for each dog (just as it is for each person based on activity, metabolism, age, etc) but I read somewhere (sorry...don't remember the source) that you give 17 kcals/lb to maintain weight.
rottnlabs is correct.
The amount of daily kcals a Lab needs depends upon --
-- its current weight (bigger Labs usually need more than smaller) and
-- age (young puppies usually need 2X to 3X the amount of daily kcals for a given weight as an adult dog of that same weight -- this multiplier gradually declines to 1X as the Lab approaches maturity) and
-- amount of daily exercise (dogs with high daily levels usually need more and vice-versa) and
-- the level of individual metabolism (high, low, average)
