    DefaultKennel Cough???

O.K. I think Monet has kennel cough, but I'm not sure as none of my dogs ever had it.
The cough sounds like it does when a dong drinks too much too fast and hacks for a few seconds.
I know people treat with Robitussin, but what kind. All I have here is PE (expectorant) and Allergy & cough.
    TIA!!!

    Hi Steph,
That's what it sounds like. I think it's Robitussun DM, but I'm not positive and I forget the dosage. You might also encounter the backwards sneezing thing and throwing up of foamy stuff

Warning though, it didn't do squat for Frankie. I actually thought he sounded worse after I gave it to him.

That didn't do anything when my puppy had kennel cough. I had to take her to the vet for all kinds of meds to clear it up. You may want to take the dog to the vet and have them prescribe the good stuff.

Some vets feel that it is best not to treat this condition with antibiotics since it is almost always self limiting and the organism is a normal inhabitant of the upper airways. Treatment may lead to resistance problems and difficulty treating the most serious complication, pneumonia, if it occurs. So many dogs are very uncomfortable due to the severity of the cough that I think most vets do use antibiotics to treat this. I personally like sulfa/trimethoprim combination antibiotics such as Ditrim (Rx) or Tribrissen (Rx) or doxycycline but I suspect that many antibiotics work well for this condition -- and no antibiotic at all is OK most of the time. Use of a cough suppressant can make the dog a lot more comfortable, whether antibiotics are used or not.
Mild cases may improve without treatment. Conventional treatment of kennel cough often involves antibiotics which tend to relieve the animal's symptoms fairly quickly, but also have a general weakening effect on their immune system, which can cause further problems, especially in the long-term.

Vaccinations to prevent kennel cough are also often recommended. But research indicates that frequent vaccination or over-vaccination may unnecessarily stress a pet's immune system.

    Hope this helps.
