Just wondering at what age most people get their males neutered? My boys are coming up on six months which is the standard time around here. Have read though that it may be best to wait until a year or so. Any thoughts?

I agree with Labby. There are definately benefits to waiting.

for larger breeds such as labs it is after 12 months of age.
around here is usually the 6mth period, our vet and breeder said the once the balls drop, its time to neuter
also call around, our vet is great but they use surgery for the nuetering
but here in Edmonton there is a place that only does nuetering and its all laser, so no stiches and hopefully minimul pain to the dog.
If I could wait until a year (or 1.5 yrs) for Ender, I would but unfortunately if we want to continue taking him to doggy day care after 6 months of age, he HAS to be neutered. From what I gather, early neutering isn't the optimum for larger dogs due to growth plates closing etc... but it is a solution to many other problems such as an "oops" breeding and for admission into things like doggy day care for example. Any shelter/rescue dog no matter what age (I've seen as early as 10 weeks old) is neutered and many of those dogs live long healthy lifestyles.
their testicles normally drop at 6 weeks.Originally Posted by rocking23nf

our vet recommended 6 mos but our breeder said 1yr to 18 mos if we can. we waited until 16 mos for theo.
Jake was neutered last Fri and he is 7 months today. In a way I wish I would have waited because it is next to impossible to keep a lab puppy from running and jumping. He seems to be doing fine and has left the stiches alone.
