What do you feed your allergic lab? Do they still need to be on antihistamines as well?
I can see one of my labs starting to get much more itchy now that the trees are starting to come out.
We had a rescue that did well on Eagle Holistic Duck and Oatmeal and 4mg antihistamine a day when he was itchy.
Eagle Holistic Duck and Oatmeal.
My Jake, (YM) seems to have seasonal allergies, we've just started him on Benadryl, 50 mg a day and so far so good.
Einsteins Legacy - Do you just give him the benedryl dose once a day only at that dose? What food do you feed him?
I think that my lab has a lot of allergies both food and environment. She is taking hydroxyzine twice a day but she is still itchy.
FieldLabLover - what is the antihistamine that you give ?
Well I have one w/ food allergies only and I have recently switched her to California Natural Lamb Meal and Rice. The food has only 7 ingredients. To say that I am impressed w/ CN would be an huge understatement.
Allergies are frustrating -- I wish you much luck in helping your furbaby.
I use Chlortabs from WalMart. Pure antihistamine.FieldLabLover - what is the antihistamine that you give ?
Aly has inhalation and contact allergies rather than food allergies. We feed Eagle Pack Holistic Lamb and Rice. She get allergy shots, and 75mg ben. as needed.
I'm Jenn. Keeper of two labs in my home and one forever in my heart.
Throw the ball, damn it!
Lab13, My vet recommended 75 mg. twice a day, of actual people's Benedryl. I started him a few days ago on 50 mg. once a day (2 capsuls), and will up the dose to 75 mg. I will then wait and see how this dosage works (he was licking his paws). I will only up the dosage to 2x a day if necessary. This is all he's taking and so far so good.
He also has dry skin, so I'm adding a tbsp. of olive oil to his food, hopefully that will help but I expect to see a "poop" change as a result. Dry skin can also make them itchy!
I feed Kirkland brand Lamb and Rice (only available at Costco), and all of my dogs do well on this. I try to avoid corn & wheat products.
I feed my lab Nature's Recipe Easy to Digest fomula, chicken, rice and barley..he also gets Benadryl as needed..usually 50 mg twice a day but can be as much as 100 mg 4 times a day if he is really bad (he weighs 95 pounds)...however he's been pretty good lately and haven't had to use much benadryl at all.
