    DefaultHeartworm preventative

Do I need to give Siren his heartguard all year round, or is it just during bug "seasons" which for me would be spring/summer and early fall (Massachusetts)?

Also would the same apply to the flea/tick preventative?

Depends, we give the preventative year round but know there are areas it is not necessary. You should check with your Vet.

I give heart worm prevention all year. Easy, quick, cheap way to prevent it. The flea/tick....probably a lot of varibles there. I use it year round. Jack doesn't have a big problem with fleas in the winter, but he had a couple last winter. After the flea fight I went through this summer....I'll do whatever to keep them gone. I'm sure you'll get different opinions from different people. This is just what I do with Jack

check with your vet. it depends where you live. if winters are cold enough you don't need to give it year round. I am not sure what "cold enough" is though.

I would never own another dog (I live in NY) and not treat year round. My Siberians were all on 12 month prevention. I adopted Mardi from Louisiana in February and immediately put her on Revolution at my vet's suggestion. Mardi tested negative for HW when she first arrived here but the vet was skeptical and said she could convert any time over the next 6 months if she were incubating immature worms. Sure enough, 6 months later Mardi came up HW+. NO dog should ever have to go through the horrible, prolonged treatment, starting with 4 very painful shots of an arsenic containing medication, and then being cooped up on very strict crate rest for the next 2 months. Mardi is in the 6th week of crate rest and my heart aches for her because she is so bored. I try to stimulate her mind and senses but she is essentially in jail. All she wants to do is run! After playing, her favorite pastime is eating and because of her inactivity I have had to cut her rations. Poor baby! It gets below zero here in the winter but I have noticed an occasional maverick mosquito in the house during the winter. I don't know how they survive but I am not about to take any chances.

    I live in MA also.
I give Heartgard year round....better safe than sorry and it's cheap enough.
But I only do tick meds from March-November.

    Where in MA are you?
I am in NW MA-on the Southern NH border.

I live just south of Boston.

I'm going to keep up the Heartguard year round and same as you the flea/tick meds early spring thru mid fall.
Like you said it's cheap enough and where it's like a treat, not too hard to get him to take it.
