    PostDiabetes

My lab Coco was recently diagnosed with diabetes. She is 10yrs old. We have switched her food to prescription recommended food, and started insulin twice a day. I check her urine glucose every morning and still very high and already on 16 units twice a day of insulin!!! Don't know what to do!! Any advice??

    What was your Veterinarians advice?

It can take some time to regulate a diabetic. Have you done glucose curves? And if so, have they indicated the diabetes is controlled or still uncontrolled? And what type insulin are you using?

    Check out this link. https://www.justlabradors.com/forum/l...available.html

That diabetic dog site is a great online community of extremely experienced people who can really help you.

My older dog (7 years old) was diagnosed at 18 months old and we have been managing him since then. I don't feed prescription food. I feed Wellness CORE plus about 2 cups of green beans with each meal. The green beans add the carbs/fiber that is needed to allow the insulin to uptake slowly. I would keep your guy on the prescription for now, while you are figuring this out and regulating it - but you may be able to change later. Keeping a very strict feeding schedule (very little in the way of treats) makes a real difference.

My dog is about 85# and gets 21 units in the morning and 23 units at night. He has lived a really good life with few related health issues.

Oh and - Walmart is the best place to get insulin. 26 bucks a bottle versus 100 at CVS. Needles are cheaper too.

Urine glucose is very inexact. You should get a meter and learn how to use it at least until you have your dog stable.

The K9 Diabetes site will have recommendations on that too. Not all human products work well for dogs.
