    DefaultAdvice about grain free food

Been a crazy busy summer, haven't been on the computer much at all. Smokey was having ear infection issues off and on a while back and they started up again. I was thinking it may be his food my vet wasn't too sure. He has recently developed a rash on his belly where there isn't much hair and had him to the vet today. I am convinced it is his food. I want to switch him to grain free. I don't mind spending money on quality food, but, we aren't rich and I would like to get something high quality, easily accessible and affordable.

Our new vet suggested Cornucopia. Anyone familiar with this food?

Other suggestions on cost effective quality grain free brands are welcome, too.

    Thanks in advance!

What food did you feed him sofar? I fed my dog Purina One Chicken and Rice Formula. I was not happy with this food. I changed to the Kirkland one, which improved the overall health of my dog (better poops, better farts etc.).

I feed Fromm, it is about $65 for a 26 lb bag and the 12th bag is free. It lasts me over 3 weeks with both dogs. They both do great on it. The company has been around for a long time and it has never had a recall which is really important to me. I have never heard of Cornucopia.

I never heard of Cornacopia. We had the same problem with Sophie. Repeated ear infections, and her belly and inner thighs had a rash, plus she lost lots of hair! Our vet told us to go grain free, and to select a protein she had not had before. We chose salmon, since she had never had it. Within 2 weeks, her hair was growing back and her rash was gone. Gone as well is the repeated ear infections. I wouldn't hesitate to switch. Sophie is on Canidae now. Initially we had her on Taste of the Wild, but with all the Diamond food recalls, we switched. Also, feed nothing except the new kibble for 6 weeks. That is what our vet told us to do. It worked out great, hope it does for you too.

My dogs have been on Wellness CORE for several years and one of them has not had a single ear infection in that time. The other one had a fungal problem that rebounded for a while until we treated if for a much longer period - no issues since.

I also feed Fromm grain free.
My girls do excellent on all 5 grain free formulas and the company is very trustworthy. Never had a recall, small family owned company.
Fromm is the ONLY dog food company I trust at this point.

I feed Earthborn Holistics. It is $53 for 28 lb bag where I live. I get a $3 coupon emailed from the company every month. No recalls so far.

Thank you all. I'm going to get him some food today. Hoping for his sake the switch is what will help his ears. I know he must be miserable but he is pretty stoic and just a happy go lucky lab!

I had never heard of Cornucopia either and the price is outrageous! And of course, it can only be ordered through a veterinarian (more expense)

When switching to grain free do you also make the switch gradual to avoid tummy upset or to get him off the grains should I just make the switch?

My dogs are not bothered by food changes but all dogs are different. You might want to do a gradual change, especially if he has a sensitive tummy. I hope it helps him, poor guy.

I just switched. Sophie has a cast iron stomach, so it was no problem. Remember when you switch to only give treats that are included in the ingredients of the food. Treats can often be the culprit....
