My puppy is about 10 months old and his front dew claws are cracking and breaking. He runs around a lot but his front claws just seem not to be filing down as much as I thought they would be. Ive tried to trim his nails myself but he just does not let me (when the vet did it, it took 4 people to hold him down. He weighs almost 84 lbs). With them so long though the front dew claws have been catching on to things and tearing. Does anyone have any advice on what I should do to at least help with the cracking and breaking if he is not going to let me actually trim them?
In the long run it would be better if you trained him to let you trim them ! It will take a while to condition him but will be worth it in the future !
It's a shame that your vet allowed the trimming to be forced on your dog ! That only makes it worse. Kindness and treats - lots of praise after just one claw and at least hours in between repeated over four or five weeks should bring him round, but you will need a lot of patience.
What Colin said.
Now on the cracking and breaking......what are you feeding him?
