DefaultA couple of questions about speying

But first a little background history: I have worked in a dog rescue centre for nearly 8 years now and have never know any different than neutering dogs as soon as they reach 6 months old, no exceptions. With that in mind when we got Penny I always planned on having her speyed as soon as she reached six months. Penny is now 5 months old and the time is fast approaching where I need to make a decision... Do I do it at six months or do I wait? My vet said I should wait until after her first season. I know all the medical pros and cons such as reduced risk of cancers and pyometra etc.
    So I have two questions:

    1. I know it differs between individual dogs but what age did your females have their first season?

    2. Can anyone point me in the direction of some articles with pros and cons of neutering, specifically about what I have seen many people talk about on here such as waiting until growing has finished etc and why?

    Thanks

You could check with your breeder to see when mom first went in to heat.

Tanya, thanks for the really great references.

I didn't read them all but read a number of them. The very best (IMO) is:
