ExclamationNeed advice...puppy has Sarcoptic mange, comes home saturday

I need some advice or reassurance...
We are picking up our puppy Saturday. He is a rescue lab mix...was rescued from the shelter in Texas with his mom and litter mates (all 9 of them) when he was 1 day old, now about 9 weeks and just transported to RI. Upon arrival the fosters noticed that the puppies were all very scratchy so they went to the vet and were diagnosed with a mild case of Sarcoptic mange. They are taking Revolution, had one dose today and will get 2 more spaced 2 weeks apart.
How concerned should I be? They said the case is very mild, treatable and not likely to ever return as it is not the genetic type of mange.

I am trying not to get upset but I am a first time dog owner and cant help feeling a bit freaked out and sad by this news...help?

Don't freak! Can be easily treated, definitely not something to be overly concerned about. It is awesome that the fosters of the puppies picked up on it do quickly.

Thank you! that seems to be the general consensus....I called and bumped our first vet visit here up to the 15th instead of the 22nd. I want to get her all clear before we go over my moms or anywhere else we will meet up with friends dogs.

I would not take the puppy anywhere other dogs might be or have been until she's had all of her shots, usually around 4 months of age. There are just too many things they can pick up from adult dogs and her immune system is already compromised because of the mange. Also, the mange can be spread to any other animals your pup is in contact with before it is cleared up.

    thank you
I am fully aware of how it is not a good idea to take him anywhere where we can contact unknown dogs...that was never in the plans! We did have a play date with my moms pup that is now on hold until after we see our own vet on wednesday and will take it from there!

Good idea - you don't want to give your Mom's pup mange!
