    Defaultdew claws?

Hi..I hope this is the right place to ask this!

We get our adopted puppy next Saturday and a few friends and family who have dogs have told em to check if he still has his dew claws because they may need to be removed?
Do labs often need to have them removed or just if they are too loose?
I didn't even know this was an issue with dogs...I apparently have way too much to learn still!

I am one who thinks there is no reason to remove dew claws. I've never had a dog without them.

No reason to remove dew claws and the only time you can humanely do it is in the first few days of life anyway. A decreasing number of breeders remove dew claws. Dogs actually do use them. They are in a lot of ways the dog version of a thumb and removing them is amputation, not clipping a nail. It is quite painful to do to an 8 week old puppy or an older pup/dog.

If you think about it removing a body part because it might get injured someday is kind of dumb.

Dew claws are sometimes removed when a litter is only a few days old. To remove them later is not recommended, unless one gets ripped. I've had dogs with and without and never noticed a difference.

leave them. If they were like SUPER big maybe one could consider it but it is an amputation of a toe and a pain in the rear to heal (been there). One of my last fosters had fairly large flappy ones and he was super active in all kinds of surfaces (including bush/forest/snow/ice) and never had an issue so I am leaning more towards not bothering even if they are flappy.

thank you! That was my gut thinking...but my mother recently had her bichon's removed by her vet, at the same time she was spayed. I had never heard of that being done before! This is worse than when you have a kid with the unsolicited advice from everyone!

My boys are one of each. Champ's were removed when he was a puppy, and very poorly done. Huge scar marks.

Buddy still has his. He uses them to hold onto toys and bones. He holds onto things much better than Champ can.

Thank you! I plan now to just leave him be. I couldnt bear subjecting him to unnecessary pain and surgery!

Personally, I would leave them....and on a Bichon? In my opinion absolutely NO reason to remove them...other than pad the vet's bank account.....
