    Defaultsilent heat

my little cavalier is late with her heat season but is now attracting the other dogs. I was worried about an infection and took her into the vet but they didn't see anything wrong. Now I wonder if she might be in a silent heat...can she get pregnant during this? Would the vet know if she was in a silent heat?

Yes she can get pregnant during a silent heat. you would have to do progesterone testing to be sure if she is in a silent heat. has she always been on a normal cycle in the past? If so go by that to calculate about when to do first blood draw. it could get expensive. best to just keep her away from males for the next 4 weeks to be safe.

thanks...she has had 3 normal heat cycles. I don't know how everyone else manages households of show dogs female and male. I am wondering if maybe I should just spay her and concentrate on obedience trials.

It will depend on your dogs. Some males are better behaved than others when a female is in heat.

some will chew thru a door to get to a girl in heat.

If you choose to check progesterone best bet is to do your first blood draw around day 8 or 9, counting first day of bleeding as day one.
