DefaultTopical Treatments that won't be licked off?

Hey y'all - I have an 11 year old lab who has his share of "old man" lumps and stuff. My wife usually takes him to the vet at the first sign of a sniffle, but she's putting this one off and I thought I'd get your input before taking him to the vet myself. He has what my kids call and "old man wart" on one of the toes of his back foot. It doesn't seem to bother him at all when he walks or runs, but he has licked at it so much (he licks all of his paws - annoying. Is it boredom?) that it has a small sore on top of it. I'm in favor of having it removed - it's about the size of a small acorn now - but the wife is afraid they'd have to put him under and she doesn't want to do that at his age.

How would you approach it? Is there a medication we can use for the sore that won't be eaten off 60 seconds after it's applied? It doesn't look bad now, but these things can get worse, and I'd hate to see it get infected, if it isn't already.

I'd have a vet look at it asap. The growth could be cancerous or it could be innocuous. The constant licking could lead to infection certainly. There is no way to treat it effectively without your dog wearing an elizabethan collar on his neck to keep him from being able to access it.
