Defaultsenior lab: arthritis, spine deterioration, and rimadyl

Can anyone give me some input. Just got back from our yearly check up with Gordy. He just turned 10 in Dec. He has had weakness in his back end but I thought it was due to arthritis. He has had a few falls and sometimes has a hard time getting up from a down position. It seems he has aged 5 years in the last year.

Anyway, vet check-up found he has spinal deterioration. He doesn't flip his back feet over when the vet placed them upside down. I just tried it at home and had the same results. Vet said he usually sees it in German shepherds. Vet does think he has arthritis as well. He sent us home with a sample of rimadyl which he thinks will improve Gordy's activity. (Lately Gordy doesn't want to do much) Vet said Gordy will do well for another couple years and if his spinal condition gets worse we can talk about other options then.

Does anyone have experience with this? thanks!

ETA: dose for rimadyl is 100 mg daily.

Samson had spondulitis but it only affected his mobility in the last two weeks at 13 years and three months. I hate Rimadyl. It doesn't suit all dogs and I hope that Gordy is different.

Jasper only has to look at a tablet to develop gastro - enteritis !

I was fearful of Rimadyl but I got to the point where I had to try it and had no problems with either my lab or my chessie. It was elbow dysplasia and not spinal issues though. Good Luck!

I did a google search on rimadyl and saw some warn about liver problems with the drug. We didn't do a blood panel so I am not sure if I should request one. I think I will wait the week and see if Gordy improves on the drug first then ask the vet.
