    DefaultIllness and change in appearence

My puppy suffered from Puppy Strangles from 8weeks old and it took 2 months of medication for him to recover from it.

He is smaller than his brothers and his fur is completely different.

    Puppy Strangles

When his puppy fur grew out his fur seemed shorter and more sleek but has now grown again into a long mass of waves. His ears look like spaniel ears! We love his unqiue qualities and wouldnt change him for the world but i would like to know what you guys thought.

Wavey back hair is not unusual.

I can't see the ears very well but no Lab that I know has hairy ears like a spaniel's so I would say that there is a mix in there if they are the same !

Adorable whatever as you said !

Thats the thing, there is no mix. Ive met the parents, seen his brothers, have the papers.

Whatever has happen to change his looks must have been from his illness or the medication.

Sorry - I should have said that I have no experience of strangles and it's not unlikely that the illness was a cause or at least contributory.

I know that Cushings can affect hair growth so this may be the same ?

Looking closer his fur looks more like a Golden's ! Maybe there's a throwback somewhere in his ancestry ?

While I am not saying it's so - there could be multiple sires in a single litter of puppies. If this is a puppy from a reputable breeder that's probably not a concern.

There are occasionally long haired Labs - sort of a throwback to some of the other breeds introduced into the Lab gene pool many, many years ago. He sure has a ton of coat!

I've seen multiple puppies from reputable breeders that have had strangles and nothing like the coat issue ever happened with them.

The dog is either not a purebred or has the long haired gene. If you are so concerned, I would consider the DNA test for breeds or the coat length DNA test that's now available.
