    DefaultRawhide

    Hi everyone!
We have a new 10 week old black lab. We've had him for almost two weeks and he's doing really well. I was hoping to get some advice on giving rawhide to dogs. I have heard about the risks of digestive tract obstruction, etc. and was wondering if any of you have had a problem with it. Thank you!

I choose not to give my dogs rawhide. Reasons: blockage concern, don't know what they are preserved with in all cases, not particularly good for them and they can be pretty gross.

Others think they are just fine, however!

I wouldn't risk it. Why base your decision on whether people have had an issue when your research already tells you that you should avoid it?

I was told by my vet not to give until their adult teeth.
Before Erns was diagnosed with IBD I used to give them when I was in the room. I wouldn't leave a dog with one and never had an obstruction. That doesn't mean it can't happen. If you are worried best not to.

What Sharon said. I have a friend whose Doberman needed surgery for an obstruction from a rawhide. And Cinder chews and swallows chew treats so I know a chunk would be gone before I knew it.

Thank you all for the advice! The research that I've done has gone both ways ( some say there are real risks, others say it's
very safe and incidents are extremely rare) so it definitely helps to hear from others with labs and experience!

I don't give my labs rawhide. Some of my friends do. My reason is, my labs are big chewers & I worry they would choke on a big piece. Also, like Sharon said, I don't know what they are preserved with. I gave mine Nylabones and when they were older I got them big marrow bones from the butcher.

Love your pup's eyes! He's really really cute

I bought mine a small rawhide bone when we first got him without really doing much research (I just assumed it was safe). He was fine with it, but it got dropped into his water bowl and you'd be surprised at the amount it swelled up! I took it off him after that (and reading about choking risks etc.). I've got other chewy things he loves, our local pets at home sells deer antler which he loves to chew!
