    DefaultGiardia - Panacur or Metronizanol?

What is best to get rid of Giardia. I have heard conflicting information, some say panacur is what works, others say panacur is NOT for giardia at all. (my vet says panacur, the rescue says absolutely NOT panacur but rather metronizonal).

    Thoughts?

(I also know it is hard to get rid of and can reoccur once they have had it when there is stress or weak immunity)

Tanya, we use Panacur on Jenica. Actually we use Safeguard, as we can buy it online or in the farmers supply store, but it is the same.

We tried quite a few different things and she would only recover for a short time before it came back worse than before. She finally ended up for three days in the emergency hospital. Her vet would still refuse to treat her for more than a few days, so we bought the medication online and treated her ourselves, and she finally recovered after a six month battle. She still has recurring issues once a year during the spring melt and based on discussions with our current vet we buy the medication in the farmers supply store and treat her when it first comes up, and it no longer develops into a major issue.

I have found that metronidazole isn't very effective anymore. Giardia has become resistant to it. I use Panacur. 7 days on, 7 days off then another 5 days on.

Is metronidazole the same as flagyl? Our vet treated with flagyl and still had issues, we had to treat again using panacur which finally cured it. This was our rottweiler, he still had issues when stressed (after boarding) but then I started adding probiotics to his meals. We haven't had a re-occur in about 3 years now. I also bought meds online to treat it a year after the vet treated with panacur because he had a bad case again, I did Labby's suggested treatment. The vet only treated for a week, I wonder if it wasn't enough even then, but it did stop the symptoms until he was boarding the next year.

Thanks guys. I will have to talk to the rescue once again. She keeps sayign panacur does NOT treat giardia. (she is usually very on the ball with this stuff).

There are so many dewormers and certain ones work better against specific types of parasites.. but it can really depend on the dog. Some people use metronidazole, some use panacur or pyrantel.. just depends.

Giardia can be really hard to diagnose - sometimes it doesn't show up in a regular fecal float, but there is a special SNAP test for it, similar to the one for HW.

Do a Google on Panacur for dogs with giardia and print one of the several thousand links out for her.
