My 4 year old lab has itchy skin and is losing clumps of hair. The clumps come out and have like dead skin at the end holding the clump together. We have tried changing food and using different shampoos. The vet has given us medicated shampoo and it causes lots of dead skin to come off, but it isn't solving the problem.
He is a chocolate lab and you can visually see where he has hair loss. Any suggestions??????
Has his thyroid been checked, taken skin samples?

Agree with the above, also think you should have him allergy tested.

He could have mange, he could have a skin bacterial problem, he could have massive hot spots taking over. I wouldn't point to allergies at this point either. Does he swim alot and then lay around wet?

i'd sure let the vet see and maybe do a skin scraping.
