    DefaultPuppy Food Confusion

    Okay,
So the breeder told us to feed Splash Adult food and the vet says this is wrong and to feed him large breed puppy food. What kind of food do you feed your puppies?

You will get lots of advice on this, a constant hot topic. A lot of Lab owners feed Large Breed Puppy(LBP) food, switching to adult between 6-12 months. A lot feed puppy food, not large breed. Some switch over to adult food as soon as their pups can chew it. Lots of options, lots of opinions. I don't plan on getting another pup, but if I did, I think I would forego the LBP feed and switch over as early as possible.

We switched Tracker over to adult dog chow and he seems to be doing good on it. I think he should be good on it.

Labs are not large dogs. Feeding LBP does not really make sense to me. I would defer to your breeder who knows their lines and what they require. Depending on when your vet went to school, they may not have had very much training in nutrition.

You also don't say how old your puppy is. Most are just fine to switch over to adult/all life stages food by 5-6 months.

Follow the advice of your breeder. They know their dogs best. I'd be pretty upset if my puppy buyers didn't follow my advise. I NEVER feed LB puppy food. Labs are not a large breed, despite what the dog food companies try to tell you. I tell my puppy people to buy 2 20# bags of regular puppy food (in the brand I require) then switch to adult of the same required brand and feed that for the life of the dog.

If you read the side of the bag for the nutrition information you'll find adult food and LBP are often almost identical.

Stick to what the breeder recommended. Most vets don't take nutrition courses as part of their curriculum.

That said, if your pup's breeder was just the neighbor down the road where her two pets made puppies, scrap their opinion and that of the vet's, and just go with a good quality regular puppy like Pro Plan Puppy or Pro Plan Selects Puppy.

Okay, good...because we bought a GIGANTIC bag of adult food after the breeder told us that is what we should start him on. He is a bit over four months old, by the way...sorry I forgot to mention that.
