My newest pup will be 9wks this Friday. Monday night she woke me up, coughing and gagging. This went on through the night. She was fine yesterday during the day, so I chalked it up that maybe she got into something and just had a throat irritation or something. Well, last night she did it all through the night again. I noticed she does it upon waking up, then she's fine. It's making me think distemper or "kennel cough", and that's scaring the crap out of me. My vet's closed today, otherwise I'd already be there. She has an appointent this Friday, which on that day she will turn 9wks. She had her shot @ 6 weeks. Any ideas as to what it could be? She's still eating, drinking, and torturing my 2 adults. It's just the coughing and gagging upon awakening.
Sounds like kennel cough to me - your vet is closed on a weekday? WTF? I'd get in to see another one pronto. She is very young to be that sick.
Sharon, Blaise and Diesel.
Sounds like kennel cough to me to. I would find another vet and take her. Just like big brown dog said she is very young!
~It doesn't matter how smart the dog is,it matters how smart the owner is.
I wouldn't wait until Friday.
It could be kennel cough. But I went thru this with a pup (older at 5 months) and it only happened at night or upon waking in the a.m. like your pup.
He plays quite a bit with my adults and knowing he could not have been exposed to KC I just kept an eye on him. It resolved itself in 3 or 4 days. I believe he had an irritated throat from his mother and grandmother grabbing him by the throat to reprimand.
I was sure to check with my buyer that the pup had not been to any dog parks or the vets office and they confirmed he had not.
IMO if it was kennel cough your pup would show symptoms during the day too. But it would be best to check with your vet.
I would get to an Emergency Vet asap, she is very young and you don't want to take any chances.
Got her in to a vet last night. All tests came back negative. They also checked for roundworm because they can work their way up into the lungs; negative as well. I told her Snowco's story on her Lab and she said that could very well be the issue and to keep a close eye on her. I do think that was the issue. She did not once cough/gag last night. Life is good again.
I am glad that your puppy is getting better now.
