Default2 Year Old with Cold Tail... Again

I was thrilled to come across this forum this morning while doing research. We have 2 chocolate labs, ages 2 and 4.

We woke up last night to the crying and whining of our younger lab. He was extremely uncomfortable, would not sit down, and held his tail about 2 inches from his body. This will be the third time he's had Cold Tail in the past few months. We've done everything we know of to prevent this from happening. This time it was brought on by playing outside in the Texas heat, then getting wet in a short rainstorm. The poor thing is extremely uncomfortable. Is there anything else I can do to prevent this from happening? We've NEVER given him any non-veterinary prescribed medicine, is there anything I can give him to make him more comfortable?

Thanks for any information you have!

Sorry, no answers for you but we are going through it too. I took BJ up to the river on Saturday and yesterday he started crying and acting like his tail was attacking him. Poor guy. Have you read the information on Labby's website about cold tail?

My older dog Belle got cold tail several times when she was younger. As you probably know, it does not last too long.

An aspirin (buffered or coated) helps a bit. Other than that I am not sure that there is much you can do to prevent it. Seems I read somewhere that older dogs tend not to get it as much, but I am not sure about that, and I am sure there are exceptions to everything. It may just be coincidence, but once I put Belle on Glucosamine and Chondroitin, she did not have another incidence, and her kids (on G and C as a preventative since they were young) have never had cold tail.

Good luck, and I hope your pup gets well soon!

Our labs get it too. With rest, it usually goes away in a few days.Hope your lab feels better soon.

He's doing a lot better today, I'm sure he'll be back to his normal, happy self tomorrow. Thanks for the help!
