My name is Barb and I have a 7 year old male labrador called Scooby. He's developed sore jowls and have been back n forth to the vet to see what I can do. Everything I have had to clean/treat them doesn't heel them. He stratches and makes it bleed, plus the goey brownish stuff gets everywhere (not that I mind) but am concerned I am doing something wrong.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can use please? I would be grateful for some feedback.
Have they done any testing? Is it yeast? My last lab had yeast on his chin and it made him scratch a lot. It wasn't nearly as bad as what you are describing though.....no drainage....just lots and lots of itching. I suspect that food allergies were to blame as it resolved with a change in food and Malaseb pledgets.
Thanks for replying I appreciate it.
Not a yeast infection, I have been told because of the way his top lip hangs over the bottom it doesn't get that much air to it to dry it out. So we've tried all sorts of things to dry it out and wipes, the only way to rectify it would be surgery and I'm not sure I want to take him down that path, but if it does need doing I will. I will take a picture in daylight and add to my profile see if that explains it a bit better.
Thanks again for your reply. Your lab has such a happy, playful face
Sam likes a good muzzle scratch, but hasn't had the problem you're describing. She also wipes her muzzle on the grass after eating (and sometimes on the couch).
I assume you've used the cone to prevent scratching when you're trying to treat this?
Only thing I have is try to dry his muzzle after he eats, drinks, or swims.
