    Defaultpuppy food

Right now Vader (8 weeks) is getting Natural Choice food from Nutro - 2/3 cup 3x daily. I am wondering if there is a good food on the market for Lab puppies. Also, what is your opinion regarding feeding time? I have heard 2 schools of thought on this, some say to take food away after a certain amount of time and others say to keep food handy for such a young pup. We are working hard on house training and Vader is picking it up pretty quickly (he is a lab after all). What is your recommendation? I am a first time dog owner.

Thanks in advance, you guys are great and I really appreciate your help.

I don't like Nutro. I feed my puppies ProPlan Chicken and Rice puppy food until they're 3 months of age, then I switch them to ProPlan Adult Chicken and Rice. My dogs eat at scheduled times rather than free feed. I don't believe in free feeding and believe that it puts the dog in charge of the relationship rather than you, the alpha person controlling the food.

Thanks Laura, that is very helpful. I will keep my eye out for ProPlan. Can I ask what you don't like about Nutro? Again, i am a first timer and am looking to educate myself as much as I can. Thanks.
Also, I am inclined to agree with you about scheduled feedings for the reason you listed, and also for house training purposes as well. I know from Vader that he needs to void 5-10 minutes after eating and again about 2 hours later. It is really important to me that I raise a healthy and happy pup and am thrilled to have found this forum. You guys are terrific!

The rice in Nutro outweighs the protein source so you are feeding mostly carbs rather than protein and most likely have very large stools.

    I don't free feed either.

As Patty said, the rice outweighs any meat in the food. Beyond that, Nutro used to be a very good food. Over the past few years, they've had issues, some of them serious. I used to feed Nutro, and recommended them highly, but wouldn't feed it now if it were given to me for free.
