Defaultpatch of odd hairs on tail

our 4 month old chocolate lab has a patch on her tail where the bottom half of the hairs are white. It is only noticeable when the hair is disturbed as the outer is normal brown. These hairs seem quite loose and many come out if the patch is rubbed. any explanation? And reassurance that this is temporary I hope!

Very common on Chocolate Labs and no - it is not temporary. Sorry.

    really interesting article Laura! Thanks!

Diesel has that ring of white hairs on his tail - his are all white - not shaded from brown to white. There are enough brown hairs in the area too - so that it is not a perfect ring of white, but it is noticible as a coat difference.

A friend has a bullmastiff who has a coat thinning on that area of his tail and she was told this was a glandular.

My chocolate boy has the same ring around his tail. His has gotten more noticable as he has gotten older. Have you noticed it elsewhere? The hairs in my boy's topcoat are also white/gray at the base. You can't see at all just to look at him, but when I brush him it is very noticable when he is covered with these gray/white/brown shedded hairs.

Puff (yellow) has a very small patch of white hair at the very tip of her tail. I consider it kind of a birthmark and kind of cute.

Here is Hoss at 45 days of age and a white ring around his tail. It has since disappeared
