For the last two mouths, my huntin buddys 6 year old black Lab has started chewing /licking the tops of his legs and feet. The knuckle area of his feet are completely raw. He isn't chewing or scratching anywhere else. What can we do to stop this ,,,WE HAD THIS problem with Dakota for years didn't get him to stop it was a lot of time and money? I would love to help Steve,, I just don't have the answer SO,,,,Any thoughts or suggestions would be great. Thanks!
could be allergy issues....mine developed food allergies, we switched to
single source protein/carb ( duck and potato ) it seems to help
if the paws get red from the licking, have your friend apply some
witch hazel...we keep it in a spray bottle..it helps relieve the itch and
the smell keeps them from licking ( for a little while at least )
Tell you friend to slowly switch his pup to a grain-free diet, and see if that helps.

I have this problem with Tucker...he has TERRIBLE allergies...he is on Atopica and Limited Ingredient Food...and he STILL licks and chews...I really like the witch hazel idea - I hadn't heard of that - I will have to try it...
Whenever he licks or chews now, I get out a washcloth and wash his feet...sometimes I think it might be pollen or something from outside making him itch...it works SOME of the time...
Please report back if you find a solution!!
Thanks you all,, this may take some time
It sounds like allergies... I would switch to something with a limited ingredient formula. Wellness has one with a single protein source of fish. It has done wonders for my allergy dog. Although a lot will tell you that it's the grains in the food that are the issue. I am not on that boat... I am on the side of the protein source being the culprit in most allergy cases... Just my opinion...
