in arthritic joints if used long term. . I have read it can and vets have either not known or different opinions.
Injections for Erns serious H.D. don't seem to be working as well as they did so yesterday the vets took xrays. They show more arthritis and one hip is quite bad. He has a hair line fracture on the ball of the hip and arthritis builiding up here and the joint. He was diagnoised with H.D. when I got him 5 years ago. He is 8.
He has IBD and on a low dose Pred for that. The vets want to increase it to try and help his hips. I hate the stuff and have managed to get it down to 1/2 every 3rd day.
He is on green lip mussle and glucosamine. He swims most days and I am careful about excersise.
Chris, I have no idea, but I want to say that you and Ernie are in my prayers. I hope the big guy feels better soon. Maybe try upping the Pred to 1/2 every other day, instead of every 3rd, to see how he responds? Is he on pain meds for the HD?

Thank you Jackie.
He has been on long term Pred for hiis IBD and lost all the muscle tone in his head due to Pred so I am really trying to keep it down. He is tested regularly for diabetes and Cushings.
He has monthly injections for his joints but they don't seem to be working. Hence the xray. He can't have other meds due to his gut issues.
I am just about at my wits end with it all. I know just give in and give the Pred, but it isn't good for him and if it is going to start making his joints worse with more pain I am stuck.
He is on Pred on every day now for 2 weeks then wean off, then as you say even 1/2 every 2nd day may not be as bad as I think.
I don't know about canine issues but in people long-term steroid use can affect bone density (osteoporosis). Not sure if it's the same in dogs. I'm leary of using them long-term but you have to weigh benefit vs risk.

You might want to ask your vet if Purinethol or Imuran could be used in conjuction with the prednisone to treat the IBD. In humans this is a very effective treatment for IBD. I don't know if either of these could be used on a canine. Neither drug is without side effects. If indicated one or the other may be effective enough to wean him from the steriods.
