    Defaultdiabetes and auto immune disease

I have a yellow lab, Nick, who is 7 years old - in Sept. 09 - we noticed that he'd been limping on one leg, very lazy and was bleeding from his mouth. our vet said that he was most likely bitten by a tick and contracted Ehrlichiosis from the tick. he's been on tons of medication including Prednisone which he was on for almost 7 months - my vet finally weened him off of that, but now he developed diabetes and needs insulin shots twice a day. My vet said that he could've developed diabetes as a cause of being on Prednisone for such a long time. We've taken him to the vet 2 or 3 times a month to do blood tests on him because on top of all of that they think that his auto immune system is attacking his body because his red blood cell count is not where it should be. He's also losing his fur which doesn't make any sense to me. Right now he is currently taking insulin, azathioprin and now cyclosporin medications. I really like our vet and don't think that she's just taking our money, but at the same time I'm worried because he just doesn't seem to be getting any better. If anyone out there can offer some advice or anything I would really appreciate it.

    Hi -

I am sorry to hear that your boy is so sick. I have a young diabetic lab who does not have any other medical issue at this point (he is 4 and has had diabetes for 2.5 years.

You may wish to find a Vet school to get a second opinion on how your dog's disease is being managed. He is not like most diabetic cases who develop as true seniors (like 10 or older). If there is a University within driving distance from you this is worth a try. Not sure where you are.

I'm confused - they treated the Ehrlichiosis with Prednisone? Or was that a separate issue?

Either way, I would agree with Sharon. I would try to find a boarded specialist in Internal Medicine to see your dog. Veterinary Schools will have them, but so will many veterinary specialty referral centers. You can find one here . Good luck and please keep us posted on how your dog is doing

thank you both for your help -I'm in St. Louis, MO and I think that Mizzou has a good vet school that i might have to end up taking him too. I'm making an appointment with a specialist today so we can hopefully figure out what is going on with him. My vet put him on prednisone to treat his immune system - he was on Dyxicyclin for the Ehrlichiosis - its just been one thing after another. And right now I'm freaking out because he's losing his fur and has noticable bald spots. I'll keep you posted and thanks again for your assistance!
