How often do you clean your labs ears? AND what product do you use?
I only clean when needed, and then I use a version of that solution that is posted on the Woodhaven lab site.
only when needed. purple stuff
I scope ears to determine if they need cleaning. If so I use 1/3 water, 1/3 white viniger and 1/3 witch hazel for cleaning. If I have an issue or yeast problem I use the purple sollution. Put it in (leaving it there) 2x/week and clean on alternate days 1-2x/week until it is cleared up.
what is the purple stuff. Snowco, I use the same solution as you.
16 oz. witch hazel
4 tablespoons Boric Acid Powder
16 drops gentian violet
You can also buy it already made on line such as Amazon.com
Thanks Snowco, does it clear up yeast well? My Nickey has a yeasty ear, and want to clear it up, since the vet seems to think that there is nothing wrong, but yet the smell could knock you out!
Last Oct. my moms dog had awful yeasty infection, tons of black gunk. 6 weeks of the purple solution 2x/week and cleaning on different day 1x/week and she has been great.
I do scope her on a regular basis to be sure. She had a slight flair up recently and in a week or so on the above 2x/day, etc. is looking good.
I use a microfiber cloth over my finger, once a week or so. If it comes out dirty (which it hasn't since we got them both on grain-free food), then I do a realcleaning with the purple solution.
The only reason I do it that often is because they love it, and if they see a microfiber cloth in my hands they will come and ask for an ear cleaning.
