    Defaultfirst heat

this is my dogs first heat she is 12 months old. She has been flowing now for going on 11th day. sometimes very light sometimes very heavy. This morning was very heavy. I thought that by now she would be over her bleeding. I put a call in to my vet on Friday but no response over the weekend. Is this in the normal range or should I be concerned? otherwise she is acting normal. Drinking, eating, and plenty of activity.

    Thanks

It's been my experience that, for their first heat, they sometimes bleed for the duration. However, you need to be just as vigilant about watching over her and making sure she's not bred. Also, I keep mine out of water as that can lead to infection.

my real concern was the amount of blood. she at times flows heavy and it is a dark red instead of the blood and urine mix. I am planning on having her spayed after her first heat.

    Thanks

I have 2 in season now- one for the first time. She's 12 days in and is still flowing a bit- yesterday was heavier than today, but it has been changing day to day. When my other one had her first, she flowed for the entire month with varying degrees. However, if you are really concerned about it, a vet visit may be in order.

Thanks for your input. I assumed that a female dog going into heat was normal and the blood was normal just didn't know what to expect with her first one. It has been probably 15 years since I had been around a female dog in heat and didn't remember this type of flow.

Thanks Again. I will watch her and see how she does.

You may notice she flows heavier when laying down or sleeping. Each dog is different. On the average they swell for a week and bleed for the next 3 weeks but some will bleed more or less than others. Some will even start bleeding prior to swelling.
