Peanutbutter is fine. In fact, it's quite popular with dogs. You can easily hide pills in a spoonful. To get pills in a dog without food, have him/her sit, open their mouth and put the pill waaaay back on the back of the tongue. Then hold the dog's mouth shut, pointing up, and blow gentley on their nose until they lick. The licking motion causes them to swallow.

I used to use cream cheese when Puff was younger but ran into the lactose intolerance/flatulence problem as she got older.

So we switched to Peanut Butter.

I buy large jars of PB, transfer portions into smaller (oleo/butter) tubs, and then dip the tablet or capsule into the PB and offer that to my Lab's mouth.

    Gone in an instant.

    No more dog farting.

Put PB on a spoon and press the pill into it. When dog opens their mouth scrape the PB onto the roof of the mouth. All the licking will take the pill down.

Don't you get lots of dog farts from the lactose intolerance?

Or do you give lactase enzyme pills to counteract it?

This (lactose intolerance) typically begins around 6-12 months age, continuing everafter.

I like the trick about blowing on there noses to get them to lick. After 5 days of taking his tablets, we had trouble with harvey tonight and had to wrap it in chicken to get it down him :-)

Labs are SOOO much easier with this than some other breeds - my shepherd for example. We'd hide a pill in something (like liverwurst spread) - she'd extract the pill from the spread and spit it out - PATOOIE! Pill giving with her was always a matter of putting it as far back on her tongue as I could reach and holding her mouth closed until she finally swallowed.

The Labs - toss them something that smells good with the pill stuck inside and its inhaled. No muss - no fuss.

Pills for HK have not been a problem at anytime if wrapped in something. Cheese, PB, Meat, bread, anything. The dog is food motivated. I sometimes think I could train her to talk, human language, if I offerred her food to do it. Okay, that is a stretch, but you get the idea.
