With the recent concern over chicken jerky, and for those with allergic labs, I've discovered something that works great for treats:
Raw green beans. Raw apple bits. Raw fruit that labs aren't allergic too, as well as veggies.
Max has been given meaty treats, as well as Sophie, their entire lives. The second I whipped out the green beans in particular, it was like I had bits of steak in my hand. I did it at the suggestion of the vet when we first got Soph since she was so overweight. They love it.
ALSO, a method shown to me by a couple of local dog trainers -- pre-measure out the amount of kibble for your dog's NEXT meal. For all treats, rewards, reinforcements, use small amounts out of that NEXT meal amount.
This method insures that you do not overfeed.
It's worked great for us for the last 6 years.
