    DefaultQuestion from new member

Hello everyone, I am Teresa from Manitoba, Canada. I joined this forum because my husband and I are about to send in our deposit for a female chocolate lab due to be born in late summer 2009. We currently have 2 cocker spaniels and are wondering if anyone else has cockers and how well they get along with your labs? My cockers love other dogs and I know that labs tend to love everyone and everything so I really have no worries! I am so excited and can't wait until next summer! Let me know your opinions!

    Hi, welcome!!

Have you ever owned a lab before? I know Sandy (user name zoezoe) used to have a Cocker that she absolutely adored. I hope she sees this.

No, we haven't owned a lab before, but my parents have a lab cross that we adore. We just love the lab temperament and personality. I grew up with 2-3 large breed dogs as part of the family at all times throughout my childhood and really miss having a bigger dog around.

Hi there. I do not have a Cocker but my mother breed them when I was small. I don't see any problems with mixing large and small breeds especially since you say your Cockers are dog friendly. Be prepared for a couple years of crazyness with a lab. Most important is training when the are young. Good luck.

Most Labs need doses of vigorous daily exercise to run down their rubber band motors which get wond tight again every night.

The usual rule of thumb is about 5 minutes/day for each month of age up to 12 months. Retrieving/fetching is a good way to give them some exercise without wearing you out. A daily walk on a leash is rarely sufficient.

No problem on the exercise...my cockers also need lots as they are very high energy. We walk/jog at least an hour and a half each day mixed in with regular games of fetch and free running in the yard. Thanks for letting me know though.
