We got a 14 foot aluminum boat with a 40 HP motor a few months ago. We take it out on the Delaware River to fish and just relax.
Up until last night we had never taken the dogs out on it. Well next month we are going on vacation to Lake Champlain in VT and we'll be taking the dogs and the boat so we really want to try to get them used to it before the trip.
My main concern with Elias was his fear of the motor, he tends to be scared of loud noises from things such as a power drill, saw, nail gun etc. I was also slightly concerned with keeping him in the boat. I really thought he'd try to jump into the water.
With Wyatt my concern is keeping him under control and in the boat.
We decided to take each dog out on the boat alone for their first time. We took Elias last night. To my surprise he walked right from the platform onto the boat with ease. I thought he'd hesistate. Not once did I have to restrain him from jumping into the water. He just sat and chilled and watch everything. Our goal was to beach the boat somewhere and let him out to swim, but it turns out it was high tide so there was really no where to go. When we got back to the boat ramp it was late and no one was there so we let him swim and retrieve off the platform.
Next up is Wyatt, maybe this weekend. I think I will have to physically restrain him from jumping immediately into the water from the boat. I hope he surprises me like Elias did.
"when are you going to let me in that water?"
"please will you let me in?"
Our view on the way in, too bad the power lines are there
You guys take me with you, and I will be good. I only go crazy when you try to leave me behind.

Beautiful pics - good boy Elias
Beautiful sunset! Elias is such a handsome boy.
Ellis you are such a good puppy and pretty too!
I'm sure they both will be fine in the boat, but just in case one jumps out, you may want to have a harness on them to make it easier to lift them back into the boat, even if you just make it out of rope.
