    DefaultHe Swam! On his own!

I hope the video works - it's my first. Anyway, I took BJ to visit my friend Rachel who lives near the American River north of Sacramento. We had attempted last year to get BJ to swim here and also her boy Rodeo (border collie). She and Rodeo are in training to be in search and rescue. The search and rescue group recently had a swimming day and Rodeo flunked. So we thought we would try again, just letting them walk in, no forcing. Both of these guys love retrieving - in fact Rodeo is not ball driven, he is ball obsessed. He would retrieve all day long if you could throw that long. So we started with small throws in the water, with both dogs on 20' leads. It was hot, so getting them to at least stand in the water was not an issue. The short throws went well so we kept inching the ball out a little further until they eventually had to swim. They had a blast! We eventually took off their leashes and let them go at it. When we got tired there were two little girls who were more that willing to throw the ball for them. There were lots of dogs there yesterday, and I think the lady next to us on the beach thought we were a little nuts because we were so excited that they were swimming (she had two labs who were in and out of the water) but it was so great to see BJ going in on his own and enjoying it.

I did notice what a difference that great big lab coat makes. While Rodeo has a lot of fur we had to make him take breaks every so often because that river water is COLD and he would start shivering. Not BJ though, and he dried out relatively quickly too.

BJ decided that he had had enough after a couple hours and was content to just stand with us in the water, or wander back up to where his Dad was sitting on the beach. He slept all the way home and I had to wake him up this morning. He is asleep again right now on the floor. Yay!

    Way to go, BJ!
(Love the name "Rodeo" for a B/C. He's a beauty, too!)
