    DefaultCost of raising a dog

Just saw this blurb on my Lab daily calendar:
"An article in the New York Times business section asserts that the minimum cost of having a dog is $11,580, assuming the dog lives ten years."

Never thought about the total but one time I did estimate my expenses at about $1,300 a year for food, Vet care (including the occasional emergency clinic visit), and boarding.
We do love out pups don't we.

About 10 years ago one of our daughters took an animal husbandry course at the UofW, and she called us to ask if we knew that our then current dog was going to cost us at least $10,000 over its life.

And it certainly isn't too much considering all of the joy and love they bring into our lives. I can't think of anything that brings me more happiness per dollar than my furry friends. :-*

I can see the MC ad already:

    Dog food: $6290
    Toys: $2100
    Vet bills: $3190
The love of an old dog: priceless

If half the decisions I've ever made in life were based on making a financial gain, I'd be a whole lot richer according to my bank balance. But I'd be immeasurably poorer in my heart and soul.

How true what you wrote is. Real time story bears that out for DW and I. She isn't the real dog person in the house, that would be me. I thought HK might be having another tooth problem (I was wrong) and I told DW that I was taking her into the U to be looked at and may have to make a decision on whether to try to save the tooth or just let them pull it. DW immediately called HK over to her, started cuddling and petting, and looked at me to say, 'You will tell them to do whatever it takes to save her poor teeth. End of discussion.'

You can double that for me since I have two. Best money we will ever spend IMO.

    Ursula,

What a great commercial idea!! You need to submit this to MC. I think we'd all volunteer to star in this ad.

One of the questions the rescue org asked on my application for Murray was something to the effect of how much I'm willing to spend on my dog/yr. I said "I can't give a dollar amount. I spend whatever is necessary. If my dogs are sick, they are taken to the vet. If they need medicine or surgery, they get it. If they are in such bad health that they would have prolonged suffering, they will be humanely euthanized." I guess I passed.

So true. The question is, if I didn't have dogs, how much would I be spending in therapy??
