I have a large fenced yard with lots of trees and bushes, so when the dogs scratch at the patio door I let them out. They use to want to come inside together, but they last three weeks Merlot will scratch the door to come in after about 10 minutes, and Zoey will stay out there for another hour. I had been on a two week vacation and my house sitter mentioned that, but I thought maybe she just was enjoying the nice warm up after our cold winter. I have been back for a week and she is still doing it. I went out there today to check things out and found a big hole under my deck. I got a flash light and see that she had built herself a den! There were toys, balls, bones and an old blanket under there.! Lol, I'm glad she is spayed or I would think she was getting ready to have pups.
OMG that is too funny. She has her own little hideaway. Shane will dig on occasion and he's quite good at it too!

That's the cutest thing I ever heard! Merlot's not allowed in the den?
Too funny - she's got her own "fort" outside.

That's just too funny!!!!
Maybe she is making her own "vacation" spot. ;D
That's too funny. Her own little hideaway. Now you know why there were so few toys around!

I always think that's kind of neat the way their natural instincts come out.
Bella has a spot under our deck where she likes to nap or hang out especially during the warmer weather. It's not quite as den-like as what you described, but it's a nice cool comfy indentation that she made.
Awww..what was her reaction when you discovered her little hide-away?!
