I'm getting conflicting advice/information on when the best time is to have Sonny neutered. My vet is saying between 4 mos and 6 mos. He says that by this time he should have received all the benefits of having his "parts". Also, he says that if I wait much longer than age 6 mos he will start to develop bad habits that might be attributed to having his "parts". On the other hand, I've been told by "experienced" dog people that I should wait until he is 1 year old. There thoughts were that he will need that first full year to develop and benefit from still being intact.
Of course, I'm inclined to take my vets advice first, but, I thought that I would get the forums advice, too.
There's a lot of conflicting advice about when to neuter. But I thought that I would say, in regard to your vet's opinion, that when I was deciding when to neuter Potter my vet said 4-6 months, too. When I inquired as to why, a vet tech admitted that mostly it was because people would freak out if they waited longer than 6 months and their dog started doing "testosteroney" things and try to rush their dogs in to be neutered. So my vet's 4-6 months policy was largely to preempt such complaints. That may not be the case with your vet, but I get the feeling it's usually part of a vet's opinion.
I waited until both my boys were a year old. From what I understand, that is the minimum recommended age in order for their growth plates to close. Sam had absolutely no bad behaviors, and the only thing Bodie did was hump Sam's bed. : That stopped when Bodie was neutered.
Here's some info from the articles on Labby's website:
And here's a link to all the articles, which are a wealth of information.

I waited a long time, Aries at 4 years, Tundra at 4 years too, I think if you do it at a year like bibber stated, their plates have closed, but don't quote me on that.
I had Tal neutered at 7 months because his daycare would not allow them there after 7 months unless he was neutered. It doesn't seem to have had any adverse affects on him since he is a healthy 90 lbs.
I would probably have waited until he was a year had it not been for the daycare rule. Plus, as it turns out, I was in the process of moving during the summer when he reached his 1 year birthday and with the stress of moving I am glad I had it done well before our move.
Thank you all for the comments. There seems to be a wide range of opinions on this subject.
I'm still not sure when is the best time.
You will get a lot of differing opinions on this, so I'll give you mine. ;D
Baloo is not yet neutered, and I plan to wait until he is around 2-ish, give or take. He's recently started occasionally humping (2 different dogs in total, was stopped immediately) and he marked once at my cottage ( <--- because he still squats to pee most of the time! :) but other than that he's been fine.
There's lots of information out there to help you with your decision. Good luck.

Peanut - 7 year old minpin
Monster - 3-ish year old frenchie/jack, rescue
You should neuter per your vet and your breeder.

I'm of the thinking that it's not wise to neuter until at least the growth plates are closed at 14-18 months.

My vet suggested neutering at 4 mos. My breeder says between 12-18 months. Shane is a year old, no bad habits. I will have him neutered before he is 18 months old.
