DefaultQuick Question about Bordetella (kennel cough)

I just need a REALLY quick answer...

Chris's dog had kennel cough and as of yesterday morning they said hes not sick but hes still on cough medicine. No antibiotics, just cough medicine. Would he still be contagious or would it be alright to bring Oscar around? We were thinking of bringing them both to the lake...

    Thanks!

I wouldn't. He could be contagious. Especially since yours is still a puppy. I had two fosters with KC and my dogs never got it, but they are very healthy. A puppy's immune system isn't as strong yet. I would wait.

chris's dog had it all last week and hasnt shown any syptoms since Sunday. Yesterday the vet said he was over it but has him on cough medicine to soothe the irritation. Chris says he hasnt given any cough medicine and the dog has yet to show any more syptoms. How long can the illness lie dormant in a recovering dog? I would assume it to not be a big deal, but I dont want to bring Oscar to the vet anytime soon...

You really don't need to go to the vet for KC...it's gonna run its course no matter what. Personally, with your dog being a puppy, I'd wait a few days, but that's just me.

You can take him....I just said I would probably wait. If the other one is not coughing any more...I'd usually wait a few days, but you might be fine. It's a 50/50 chance either way.

yah, oh well. I would rather wait and have no problems then to jump the gun and have a sick pup on my hands..

but still, does anyone know how long it can lie dormant in a recovering dog?

Kennel cough is transmitted through the droplets given off from the coughing and sneezing in sick dogs. It can remain in the secretions for as long as 2 weeks after infection.
Incubation is 3-10 days. The problem is kennel cough isn't just one disease its made up of many diseases so depending on which your friends dog has the info may vary.
I'd keep your pup away since his immune system isn't fully developed yet.
